Disaster Preparedness

Y2K worries? June in Ohio? Or just the old common sense adage — A pound of prevention is worth an ounce of cure?

This month’s topic is disaster preparedness, and Working Solutions Service, a service for all Union-represented State employees, is offering a free information packet on preparing for the worst mother nature (or man) could throw your way.

Disasters may happen anytime and anywhere. And when a disaster strikes, you may not have much time to respond, and most likely will have to make big decisions about providing for your family’s basic needs.

Examples:

  • A highway spill of hazardous materials could mean instant evacuation of your home.
  • A tornado or flood could destroy your family’s home and belongings, as well as your neighborhood.
  • A winter storm could confine your family to your home— but without gas, phone, water or electricity for days.

It’s easy to not prepare for a disaster: With today’s busy pace, it’s hard to find the time to prepare. It’s easy to say "I’ll start next week," but then you don’t. Moreover, it’s depressing, and may seem like a lot of work for something that probably won’t happen to you.

Need some inspiration? Call Working Solutions for their free packet of articles on Disaster Preparedness! It covers issues such as:

  • Developing a family disaster plan — Asks the provoking question of how you’ll find your loved ones when a disaster strikes, then offers some tips on forming a plan to make sure you know those you care about are safe.
  • Building your disaster supplies kits for home, work and in the car — Helps you prepare for most emergencies, so waiting for rescue is important but not life or death.
  • Disaster preparedness for childcare providers and more — Offers information that will help ease the anxiety for you and your children.
  • Dealing with winter storms — Reminds about common sense tips for dealing with winter, and if you prepare now, you’ll be ready when it returns in five months.
