Legal Service Plan

UBT offers a voluntary legal plan for eligible members and their dependents from MetLife Legal Plans, the largest provider of group legal plans in the United States and has been in the business since 1981.

Value Convenience and More

The Legal Services Plan offers you and your family value, convenience and comfort in knowing you can access legal services for almost all personal legal matters. It gives you easy and low-cost access to a wide variety of personal legal services. We cannot predict the future, but we can help you prepare for it.

The services offered from MetLife will be provided through a panel of carefully selecting participating firms. For covered services, the Plan Attorney will provide initial consultation and all work, including representation necessary to complete the matter.

Enrollment

If you enroll during an open enrollment period, coverage becomes effective July 1. If you enroll in the plan within 90 days of hire, your coverage will begin the first of the month following the first premium deduction from your pay. Please see the Legal Plan Booklet for more detailed information.

Online

This option only available during open enrollment.

Choose either Family coverage or Single coverage.

Once enrolled, you must maintain coverage for one full plan year. If you choose to drop your coverage after a full plan year, you must complete a form during open enrollment to drop. Otherwise, your coverage will continue. Please see the plan booklet for more information.

Cost of Coverage

You pay the full cost of the legal service plan for yourself and your dependents. The level of coverage you select determines the cost of coverage. The monthly rate is $15.90 for single coverage, or $18.95 for family coverage. Your after-tax payroll deductions occur the first pay period of each month, which you see in the second paycheck each month.

When Coverage Ends

Your ability to receive legal services under the plan ends when:

  • Your eligibility ends and no deductions are taken from your pay, or
  • June 30 in any year in which you drop coverage during open enrollment.

If coverage ends, the plan will cover the legal fees for those covered services that were opened and pending while you were enrolled in the plan. No new matters may be opened after your coverage ends, even if the incident occurred while covered. Please refer to the Legal Plan Booklet for any exceptions.

Maintaining Coverage

The plan is portable. If you are retiring, laid off or terminating employment and wish to continue coverage, simply contact MetLife Legal Plans at 800.821.6400 within 31 days of terminating employment for full details.

Full Coverage

For matters listed in the section below, you pay no co-pays or deductibles. If a matter is fully covered, there are no time limits or usage restrictions. The Plan Attorney will provide the initial consultation and all work, including representation, necessary to complete the matter. You may use the plan for the same service or a different service, as many times as you desire. Coverage is available in all 50 states and US Territories.

To Obtain Benefits

Before obtaining service, you must contact MetLife and obtain a Case Number, even if you’re not going to use a network Plan Attorney.

You can obtain a Case Number on MetLife’s website or by phone through MetLife’s client service center at 800-821-6400. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday – Thursday and 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Friday, Eastern Time. The MetLife representative will verify your eligibility, give you a Case Number, provide you with the name and phone number of a nearby Plan Attorney and answer any questions. After receiving a Case Number, you may call the Plan Attorney for an appointment.

If you live in an area where there are no Plan Attorneys or prefer to use an out-of network attorney, call MetLife before obtaining counsel. Once you have your Case Number, you may see the attorney of your choice, and will receive reimbursement according to MetLife’s set fee schedule.
